Around one in ten patients in every GP practice is estimated to be a carer to a family or friend who is sick, disabled, or frail. Whereas attention is given to supporting the needs of the person being cared for, a carer’s own health care and support can often be overlooked, leading to physical and mental health problems due to stress and depression.

Carers Trust has expressed deep concern about the Government’s decision not to introduce legislation on Social Care for another 18 months.
The absence of a White Paper on Social Care in the Queen’s Speech to Parliament today is in spite of comments made by the Prime Minister earlier this year, that action is needed to reform a system which can currently leave people helpless and in the dark about their care.

New research finds unpaid carers struggle without support

A worrying 64% of carers have never accessed any support services, such as respite breaks or counselling, and have only sought help from family and friends according to new research by Carers Trust. Furthermore, 60% of those that have been caring for more than five years have done so without any extra support.
The new research reveals that almost half of carers struggle on with their caring role without realizing there is any help available.
