Our mentoring programme for young carers (aged 10-18) has started up again! We have been busy matching young carers with mentors since the end of September and shortly will have matched 14 mentors with young carers.  A mentor is someone to spend time with outside of the home environment every two weeks for a year! With a set monthly spending budget, this is an awesome opportunity to plan activities together, have fun and work towards personal goals.

Photo of Cieran and his mentor James at Bowling - Cieran says "I am really enjoying spending time with James on the Mentoring Programme. He is easy to talk to and we have been having a lot of fun on our days out ; which have helped me relax . It's been good to get different views about life from my new friend".

Please get in contact with Jess at mentoring@kingstoncarers.org.uk if you would like to know more about having a mentor or becoming a volunteer mentor!

As you may know, Kingston’s Carers’ Strategy is being refreshed to make sure everyone works together to recognise

the enormous contribution of Kingston’s carers, of all ages, and to find the best way to provide the support you need.

The strategy will be created in partnership by young and adult carers, Kingston Council, Kingston Carers’ Network, health partners in South West London Clinical Commissioning Group and other voluntary sector organisations. It will be a 3 year plan for supporting carers of all ages, including young and young adult.

It is so important that your voices are at the centre of how we plan services and support in the future. You are the experts, and we would very much appreciate your time in giving us your points of view, by taking a few minutes to complete this survey. Your responses are anonymous.

The closing date is December 17th. If you need any help in completing the survey, please contact Diane on ceo@kingstoncarers.org.uk or 020 3031 2757.

Community-led action plan launches

Download the Action Plan

A community-led action plan to prevent a mental health crisis and to promote recovery launched last week.

South London Listens, a unique partnership between the NHS, local authorities, and community organisations today launched their action plan to respond to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the mental health and wellbeing of our communities.

Launched in 2020 by the three Mental Health Trusts in south London (Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust), and in partnership with local authorities, South London Listens heard from more than 6,000 people about how the pandemic had impacted their mental health and what they needed to support their recovery.

In July, community leaders called on the mental health Trusts, as well as local authorities and other public bodies to support their recovery from the pandemic by pledging their support for a series of asks.

The South London Listens Action Plan, published today, sets out how the South London Listens programme partners will deliver on their pledges over the next two years.

The plan covers 12 pledges across four priority areas:

  • Loneliness, social isolation and community involvement
  • Work and wages
  • Children, young people and parental mental health
  • Access to services

Projects will include training 650 people across south London to become Mental Health Champions to help those suffering from mental ill-health. The programme will also establish 120 mental health and wellbeing hubs for people to turn to when they feel their mental health is low or simple to feel more connected with their local community.

Mental health Trusts and local authorities have pledged to work towards becoming Living Wage accredited and encouraging others to do so. The programme will also be launching two projects to support the mental health of parents and investing in embedding mental health practitioners in communities.

The South London Listens programme has successfully secured £1m in funding to deliver this programme of work that will be delivered in partnership with the community.

An Accountability Summit will be held in summer 2022 to demonstrate progress against the action plan.

Ann Beasley CBE, Co-Chair of the South London Listens Taskforce and Chair of South West London and St Georges NHS Trust said: “Our communities have been very clear about the toll the pandemic has taken and continues to take on their mental health. This action plan demonstrates our commitment to delivering on our pledges and supporting our communities recovery.

“We know there is a long road ahead of us, but by working in partnership and listening to we can take practical action that will have a real impact on people’s lives.”

Sir Norman Lamb, Co-Chair of the South London Listens Taskforce and Chair of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust said:

“The community summit in June powerfully set an agenda for action to prevent mental ill-health and promote recovery. It is now our job to make sure the pledges we made become a reality.

“We have a once in a generation opportunity to make a lasting change. and it is inspiring to be working in such close partnership between the NHS, local authorities, and members of our communities. Together we are going to make lasting improvements to people’s lives.”

  • The new ‘Carers Passport’ has been updated and is now available from the ward managers.
  • These new cards are for relatives of patients with dementia, delirium or learning disability, or relatives visiting someone who is end of life. The passport allows families to visit their loved ones outside of normal visiting for compassionate and therapeutic reasons.
  • A Carers Passport can be left for relatives at the Esher Wing gateway for the relatives to collect.

People who have been identified by the NHS as an unpaid carer will receive a letter - they are encouraged to then take this letter to their GP to be registered as an unpaid carer, if they aren't already. This is part of a long-term strategy to have unpaid carers registered so they will be able to access any future vaccination drives.

Walk in for your Covid-19 Booster if you have been contacted

The COVID-19 booster programme is now taking place across South West London. The COVID-19 booster is an additional vaccine dose for those who have previously received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. It is for people who are the most likely to become seriously ill from COVID-19 to give them the best possible protection

Booster vaccines can only be offered to people who have at least a six month gap (182 days) from their second vaccination. When ready, you will be invited to get your booster by your GP and/or be contacted by the NHS. As well as booking online, you can now walk in for your booster at various sites across London if you have been contactedWalk-in and pop up vaccination clinics - South West London CCG (swlondonccg.nhs.uk)

The flu vaccination programme is also up and running and helps protect from serious complications from getting flu. We would encourage people that are eligible for a COVID-19 booster to also get their flu vaccination.
