"Hello,
We are looking for adults from a Black ethnic minority background who provide care or support to a family member or close other with dementia to take part in an online study investigating dementia and its impact on Black families.
The study aims to find out how family carers of people with dementia from Black communities make sense of dementia in a relative and how this may relate to their own wellbeing.
This is a vital area for research as people from Black communities are more likely to develop dementia than people from other groups, but they often have less access to specialist support. We know very little about how family carers from these communities perceive and experience dementia, but research suggests that they are more likely to be isolated from mainstream services.
We were hoping that you would be able to help us reach potential participants by sharing the study among your networks and with any carers who are in touch with your organisation. Recruitment is now open and is expected to close by 31st December 2021.
The study involves completing an online survey. It should take around 50-60 minutes to complete and all participants will be offered a £10 voucher for their time.
Please do contact me on tanisha.de_souza@kcl.ac.uk if you have any questions or would like to discuss the study further. I would also be happy to meet with your carers remotely to give a brief overview of the study and answer any questions directly.
This study is being conducted by myself (Trainee Clinical Psychologist, King’s College London/South London and Maudsley NHS Trust), Dr Juliana Onwumere (Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Senior Lecturer, King’s College London/South London and Maudsley NHS Trust), and Dr Alice Mills (Consultant Clinical Psychologist, South London and Maudsley NHS Trust).
Thank you.
Best wishes,
Tanisha
